A late rally from Killenard saw them edge out Mountmellick after an absolute thriller last Thursday afternoon.
Scoil Naomh Eoin Killenard 2-7
St Joseph's Girls NS Mountmellick 2-3
In a closely fought first half, it was Killenard who broke the deadlock with a little over three minutes played, as midfielder Aoibhe McMahon struck a free straight between the posts.
That score got her side up and running, and McMahon repeated the trick with another well-struck free moments later to double the Killenard lead.
Mountmellick were taking their time to settle, but once they did they announced themselves into the game in a big way. Róise Culleton opened their account with a point from a tight angle, before Michelle Conroy made space for herself close to goal and struck a powerful shot to the net.
Credit to Killenard, they never let the scores knock them off their stride, and Holly Hanway hit back with a point to leave the minimum between the teams at the interval, 1-1 to 0-4 to Mountmellick.
It was all to play for in the second half, and a point apiece for each side kept the scores deadlocked. Killenard then struck for a goal through Sophie Tallon, but Mountmellick hit back with a goal from Emma Bergin and point from Michelle Conroy.
They lead by two now, but Killenard finished strong, as Sophie Tallon struck a crucial second goal, and points from the impressive Aoibhe McMahon sealed the win.
