Hundreds of Laois children are the stars of summer reading challenge

More than 900 star readers complete the summer reading challenge with Laois Library Service Pictures by Michael Scully

Almost 900 children and their parents were invited to the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel on the 24th September by Laois County Library Service to celebrate the children’s reading.

For the fifth year, the library service ran the Summer Reading Challenge during the school holidays. These children had completed the challenge to read six books during the summer and so were invited to receive a medal from well known author Patricia Forde.

This year 1,600 children entered the challenge and 950 completed it.

The theme of the 2016 reading challenge was “Summer Stars” and Patricia Forde reiterated it naming the boys and girls ‘superheroes’ in her eyes for their achievement in becoming readers.

Cllr Tom Mulhall, Cathaoirleach on the night presented the awards.
