River level precarious in Mountmellick as locals fear more floods

Latest pictures from Mountmellick reveal the River Owenass to have risen to precariously high levels with local people warning that the river continues to rise.

Darren Kavanagh submitted the pictures at 4.30pm on Sunday, January 21. The pictures were taken at the bridge near the church and show the river at high levels.

Laois County Fire and Rescue Service has said officers are monitoring the situation along with Laois County Council outdooor staff having dealt with an incident in Acragar and other parts of Laois on Sunday.

Met Éireann's forecast is for dryer conditions after heavy overnight rain that was preceded by persistent rain over and snow last week. 

Laois County Council management met with officials from the Office of Public Works in the Laois town last week to assess the need for flood defences and other measures in the wake of flooding that hit the down last November.
