Temperatures dropped to around minus five degrees celsius in the midlands on Monday night ahead of the so-called Beast from the East snow storm that is expected to hit later in the week.

The Mass Lough in Ballinakill in the south of the county, not far from Heywood Gardens, was frozen over when local woman Valerie Walsh was out for a walk.

Valerie (@valpuk on Instagram) captured a number of photos around half seven on Tuesday morning which show the lake in Ballinakill frozen over.

Valerie shared the beautiful pictures on Instagram and all photo credit goes to her.
