Mountmellick marks World War I Armistice centenary with series of events

Mountmellick was among the towns around Laois that marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The town's World War I Research & Commemoration committee organised a fundraising event to pay outstanding costs of Mountmellick's memorial outside the town's library.

The fundraiser featured a screening of ‘Journey’s End’ the highly rated 2018 film about the war, on Thursday November 8 in the Balcony Cinema.

On Friday, November 9 in The Forum Hostel there was a coffee morning to review Mountmellick’s part in the War.

On Sunday, November 11 wreaths were laid a the World War I memorial to mark Armistice Day. Later that day there was a spoken word evening of remembrance for those who served and lost their lives from the area.

Photographer Denis Byrne covered the November 11 wreath laying.
