“There are over 80 estates in Portlaoise, so the size of this competition is apparent,” he noted.

“Portlaoise is just one short step away from being best in show and it will take only a small amount of effort at this stage,” he said.

“There has been a big improvement in the general appearance of Portlaoise town.

“I want to congratulate all the volunteers from around the town for their work throughout the year.

“I would also like to thank Laois County Council for their help and support. Portlaoise Tidy Towns is made up of a small group of volunteers who doggedly come out week after week to work on it.

“We are always looking for more volunteers and remember it is only just for one hour a week,” said Stephen.

The other prizewinners in this year's competition included Marian Avenue, River Views, Westlands, Esker Hills, Rathgaline, Mill Court, Rose Lawn, St. Brigid's Place, Woodlawn, Craydon Court, Rossdarragh and Aughnaharna Drive.

Luke Wynne went along on the night to take photographs for the Leinster Express.
