Abbeyleix South National School in Laois celebrated the raising of its Active School flag this week.

Kieran Galvin, Tennis Coach Ireland was on hand to help the pupils raise the Active School Flag at the school which has as its active schools motto: “Keep Fit, Stay in Shape, Don’t Quit, That’s a Mistake”.

The Active School committee is made up of pupils from 1st to 6th classes.

All pupils have enjoyed P.E classes this year along with various sports and swimming. The whole school gets active homework every Thursday evening.

They took part in the Bord Bia, Food Dudes programme, Road Safety Cycling Classes for senior pupils, an orienteering workshop, tennis, basketball skills classes, gymnastics classes and we completed our swimming sessions in Portlaoise swimming pool.

They completed Active School Week. During the week pupils took part in orienteering activities, cycling sessions, céilí dancing/modern dancing and a range of games such as rounders, basketball and soccer. Parents were also invited to join a ‘Walk About’ in Abbeyleix.

The ASF Committee work very hard to encourage all pupils to be active and healthy in school. They have had some meetings with teachers, addressed their classes, come up with lots of great ideas and initiatives, and been a really important link between the teachers and students.
