It was a poetic battle of words between the two Portlaoise secondary schools on the Borris road campus, at Portlaoise library recently.
St Mary's CBS and Scoil Chriost Rí took part in a lively debate hosted by Portlaoise Library on Monday February 12.
The motion was 'We have a better, richer society because we study poetry in school'.
The girls from Scoil Chríost Rí posed formidable opposition to the motion, raising the challenges of finding poetry relevant to their lives and indeed the plethora of demands on their time spent studying poetry.
In response the CBS boys spoke about the potential of poetry to elucidate the world around them and to help them develop their responses to it. Their argument was the deciding one for judges Jo McCane, Tommy Scott and Tony Mahon.
The CBS team is now in contention for the County Final of the Laois County Council Junior Library Debating Competition.
Suzanne Carroll is the assistant librarian at Portlaoise.
“We would like to say well done and thank you to all the students who participated,” she said.
