A team of Portlaoise AFC U-15 footballers took time out to visit the paediatric unit of Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise last week.
The team accepted an invite from Dr Tariq, the father of one of the team, Usman Tariq, to pay a visit to the paediatric unit in the hospital and see what work they do in the locality. The kind-hearted youngsters arrived with selection boxes and club calendars for the children, and visited the different wards before practicing some skills with the patients in the adjoining play room.
The team coach, Aengus Burke, spoke of his pride in how the teenagers conducted themselves throughout the event. "The lads really mixed in and had a laugh with the patients, teenagers often get a bad reputation but they really engaged with the children and all of the team were happy to do it.
"It made them appreciate what they have and how lucky they are to be able to do these things. They were still talking about it at training a few days after it, it was great to be able to do it."
The team spent over an hour in the unit meeting patients. The MSL season the Portlaoise team compete in is currently on a winter break and will resume in the new year.
