SPORT REVIEW OF THE YEAR - Footballers thriving as hurlers struggle for results in February

It was a promising month overall for the county footballers and hurlers in February.

The footballers were putting together an unbeaten league campaign, as they racked up wins over Leitrim, Waterford and Wicklow during February.

The hurlers were impressing too, though the results were disappointing. They pushed Galway all the way in O'Moore Park, before a haul of 0-15 from Ross King saw them defeat Antrim, but the finished the month with a loss to Offaly.

The Laois ladies lost out to Waterford during the month of February, and there was more bad news for Gaels all around the county with the news that Pat Brophy had sadly passed away after a long battle with illness.

The Emo club man was on the Laois team which claimed the 1986 NFL title, and had been at the heart of the club for decades.

February also saw two national elite titles for Portlaoise Boxing Club, as Michael Nevin (75kg) and Wayne Kelly (64kg) were victorious at the national stadium.

Alison Miller suffered a serious ankle injury while playing for Ireland in the 6 Nations, while there was better news for Evan O'Carroll and Eoin Lowry, both of whom won a Sigerson Cup with UCD.

Borris-Kilcotton's Scór champions, their instrumental group, were also celebrating in February as they won an All-Ireland title also, a wonderful achievement for the club.
