SPORT REVIEW OF THE YEAR - Footballers crazy comeback and St Abban's are fourth in Europe during May

May will be best remembered for an incredible Leinster SFC Round 1 game down in Wexford Park.

Laois found themselves ten points down at half-time to Wexford, playing terribly and headed for a swift Leinster SFC exit. What followed was a remarkable second-half comeback, with Gareth Dillon getting up from corner-back to kick the equaliser in injury time. Laois went on to win the game 2-21 to 1-18 after extra time.

They followed that up with a convincing win over Westmeath in the quarter-final, as Paul Kingston scored a brilliant hat-trick.

The hurlers had a less than ideal start to the Joe McDonagh Cup, losing to Westmeath in their opener before beating Antrim by a point.

The U-21 hurlers were beaten by Dublin in O'Moore Park, while the minor hurlers lost to Wexford, Dublin and Kilkenny in May, even though they turned in some impressive displays.

The Laois ladies footballers picked up Leinster titles at Minor and U-16 level in May, while boys minor football team opened their campaign with a wins over Longford and Wexford.

The most impressive team performance of the month came from the St Abban's ladies, who represented Ireland at the Euro Club finals in Finland, where they finished fourth.

The Portlaoise AFC senior mens team were beaten in the Lummy O'Reilly Cup final by Edenderry Town in May, while in basketball, Gillian Wheeler, Shauna Dooley and Ciara Byrne were all selected on the Irish U-18 squad for the European Championships.

Portlaoise also played host to the European Kettlebells Championships, held in Portlaoise CBS.
