SPORT REVIEW OF THE YEAR - Brilliant Doheny lights up August with world title victory

The month of August saw one of the greatest ever achievements by a sports man or woman from Laois, as TJ Doheny was crowned a world champion.

The Portlaoise boxer had turned pro in Australia after emigrating, and worked his way up through the ranks before earning his shot at a world title against Ryosuke Iwasa.

He travelled to Tokyo, fought Iwasa on his home turf and still emerged victorious after a barnstorming and bruising encounter. He was afforded a civic reception in September after a wonderful and brave performance in the Far East.

Nicole Turner was also getting her hands on some silverware in August as well, as she claimed silver in the European Para Swimming finals, which were held in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin. Racing in the 50m Butterfly, she served notice of her intentions for the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo.

Shane Ryan was also winning medals in the pool, claiming a bronze at the European finals in the 50m backstroke, while in basketball, Maeve Phelan Gillian Wheeler, Shauna Dooley and Ciara Byrne were all in Euro basketball action at U-16 level, while the St Abban's ladies retained their All-Ireland team athletics title.

Eddie Brennan was also announced as the new Laois senior hurling manager, and the Laois U-15s won the Arrabawn Shield final, beating Waterford 0-18 to 0-13 in the final.

Laois man Paddy Donovan was also crowned a world champion in August at the world Masters finals in Minneapolis.
