Good news for Laois padel fans as hotel gets green light for new courts

New padel court facilities coming to Abbeyleix

There is good news for fans of padel in Laois with the granting of planning permission for a new padel court pavilion in Abbeyleix.

Abbeyleix Manor Hotel has been given the green light by Laois County Council for the development which will include two padel courts and all associated site works.

The applicant Grattan Way Limited said the “proposed paddle court pavilion will house two enclosed paddle courts and will serve as a recreational facility to promote active lifestyles and community engagement”.

The application garnered support from local groups such as Abbeyleix Vitality Hub, Abbeyleix Lawn Tennis Club and Abbeyleix Tidy Towns.

“We would welcome this addition of a Padel Tennis court to the town's sporting facilities. Abbeyleix Vitality Hub would like to see that consideration be given to the community, to access the new Padel Tennis facility at community rates and during
off-peak periods,” said Marie Thompson on behalf of Abbeyleix Vitality Hub.

Aidan Lawlor on behalf of Abbeyleix Lawn Tennis Club said: “Abbeyleix Lawn Tennis Club (ALTC) committee on behalf of ALTC would like to convey support for the proposed development per planning application and welcome this facility which will provide an additional leisure and health facility within the community of Abbeyleix.”

Robbie Quinn on behalf of Abbeyleix Tidy Towns also offered support for the proposed development on the basis that it will boost revenue for the town, boost tourism and economic activity, aligns with inclusive community ethos and add to sports and recreation facilities in the town.

The planning documents outlined that the pavilion will have a total floor area of approximately 625m², with an overall length and span of 25 metres, and a maximum height of 10 metres.

"The building will feature a thermally insulated PVC roof, ensuring both energy efficiency and user comfort throughout the year. In terms of cladding, the pavilion will include two fully cladded elevations, providing shelter and protection from prevailing winds, and two partially cladded sides, allowing for natural ventilation while maintaining adequate enclosure for safe play,” the application said.

"The design has been carefully considered to integrate with the surrounding environment and to meet relevant building and planning standards. The facility is intended to enhance the local amenities by providing a modern and accessible space for paddle sport enthusiasts of all ages.

"We believe this development will contribute positively to the area by supporting health and well-being, as well as encouraging local sports initiatives."

Padel ball is a racket sport originally from Mexico and is played usually in a doubles format on an enclosed court with a smaller footprint than a tennis court.

The sport is rapidly growing in popularity across Ireland and Europe with several courts in place across several counties.

Laois County Council sought further information on whether the facilities would be solely for hotel guests or the wider community.

The applicant explained that the padel courts will be hotel guests and the general public. They said the courts will facilitate lessons and tournaments. Lessons will occur weekly while tournaments will take place every quarter. Bookings will be made through an app, a time slot will be booked and paid for on the app.

The application was granted planning permission with 15 conditions attached.
