The very first Laois Rose community competition is gearing up, heralding a new fun local fundraising feature of the world famous Rose of Tralee festival.
The Rose of Tralee is set to expand dramatically with new Community Rose events all over Ireland, with villages and towns hosting mini versions of the festival that still give entrants a chance to get to the televised final.
Durrow is the first in Laois to host the event, where a locally chosen Rose and escort will be picked to represent South Laois at the Laois Rose final on April 9 in the Midlands Park Hotel.
The event was launched in the Castle Arms Hotel in Durrow, where the fun night will be on Saturday March 11.
At the launch were Breda Heary, local community coordinator, current Laois Rose Sarah Bergin, Seoasamh and Joan Murphy from the Castle Arms Hotel and some of the Rose and Rose Escort applicants.

Breda describes the night as a fun event for family and friends to show community spirit and local pride.
“We are inviting GAA, Camogie Clubs, Societies and local communities to partner with the Laois Rose Centre and take part in local events.
“The Rose of Tralee International Festival is strongly associated with great Irish women, Irish people, and local communities globally. As we look to the future, it is our goal to support the fundraising efforts of local Irish communities and to continue to showcase the incredible contribution of great Irish women globally,” she said.
The night will feature 10 Roses and 10 Escorts hoping to win the South Laois titles.
The selected Community Rose will hold her title for a year. Should the South Laois Rose win the Laois Rose County Selection they will make it to the International stage at the Rose of Tralee Festival in August, among 31 other representatives from Ireland and across the world.
“The experience also includes the Rose Tour around Ireland, Team Bonding, Activities from quizzes to outdoor pursuits to Obstacle Courses and various other fun activities.
The spectacles in Tralee include the International Rose Ball, the renowned Parades along the streets of Tralee, culminating in the televisised selection nights of over a million TV viewers.
