Laois arts and artists awarded grants from €200 upwards

Portlaoise Musical Society is among the recipients of the Laois Arts Grants for 2023, getting €300.

Some 18 Laois arts groups and individual artists have been awarded small sums of money towards their work for 2023.

The Arts Act grant has awarded €6,000 to Laois for 2023, with grants ranging from €200 to €500.

The arts groups approved to get funding are:

Celtic Con for a Comic Convention €450, Durrow & District Pipe Band €350 for uniforms and bagpipes; Fourth Wall Laois Theatre €200 for a new drama production; Heritage House Abbeyleix €350 for art workshops, Mansworth Productions €500 for a new production, Mountmellick Comhaltas €200 for tuition, Mountrath Youth Theatre €450 for workshops, Portlaoise Active Retirement Association €200 for a Bealtaine festival event, Portlaoise Musical Society €300 towards its annual production.

Individual artists given grants in Laois are:

Annie Holland €200 for photo portraits of older rural people, David Tully €200 for art materials, David Vesey €400 for a solo piano recital at the Dunamase, Erica Borges €400 to develop a dance piece for a public performance, Hazel Restrick €200 to develop a solo exhibition, James Blennerhasset €500 for an orchestral piece with photos and video depicting Laois wetlands, Orla McDonagh €300 for an art exhibition, Paddy Critchley €400 for art materials for forthcoming exhibitions, Rebecca Deegan €400 for a new body of work. 

The grants were approved by councillors at the March meeting of Laois County Council.
