The Power of Words Festival (POW) has just published its programme for 2023 and what a jam-packed programme has been lined up for the three-day event in Laois.
The organisers have put together a veritable cornucopia of events in the host town Abbeyleix on the weekend of August 18 to 20.
Writing workshops, readings, conversations, book launches, Open Mics, music, dancing, performance poetry, story-telling, heritage walks and talks are all on the menu. A highlight is sure to be a concert by leading singer/song-writer, John Spillane, who will also receive ‘The Living Poets’ Society Award’.
In its fifth year, the organisers claim POW is quickly gaining a reputation as a destination venue for those who enjoys a relaxed and welcoming vibe. They promise a place where everyone has a space to share their words – written, acted, spoken or sung.
"We are delighted to be on the countdown to year five of our festival," says Amanda Kelly, founder of The Power of Words Festival.
"We have a larger programme of events this year, with a selection of both new and returning writers and performers, giving plenty of choice to those who come visit over the weekend. The events are being held in several venues throughout the town of Abbeyleix," she added.
Familiar names on this year’s programme include Helen Moorhouse, John MacKenna, Andrea Carter, Arthur Broomfield, Sheila Forsey, Ben Mac Caoilte, Laura Murphy and many more. One of the most popular items on the programme each year is the Open Mic events, which are dotted throughout the weekend.
"The Open Mics give a wonderful opportunity for every member of the audience who wishes to share a piece of writing, funny story, poem or song, a chance to do so, in a safe and accepting space. We look forward to welcoming, or welcoming back, friends new and old and would encourage early purchase of tickets, as events tend to sell out quickly," she said.
All are welcome to the festival launch in Preston House from 7pm to - 8pm on Friday, August 18.
