This Heritage Week the Vikings are coming to Portlaoise!
That's what the Laois Heritage Office have declared in an invite to the Old Fort in Fitzmaurice Place where The Golden Ravens
re-enactment group will be displaying Viking clothes, weapons and crafts.
"They will also be demonstrating Viking cooking and fighting techniques. Everyone welcome and make sure to come early before the Vikings go berserk," says the Laois Heritage Office at Laois County Council.
The Vikings will be in town on Saturday, August 12 from 12 noon to 4pm.
There been another Viking flavour to another event later in Heritage week in Portlaoise when the School of Irish Archaeology’s ‘big Dig’ and Coin Striking Workshop takes plae at the Old Fort
"The ‘big Dig’ is a recreation of a Viking house excavation designed for children from 6– 12 years of age. This allows children to explore the Viking world through a simulated and controlled archaeology dig.
"The Viking Coin Making Workshop will demonstrate how Ireland’s first coin was minted while learning all about ancient trade and commerce in medieval Ireland," say the organisers.
Free tickets for walks-ins will be available on the day but are limited! Tickets can also be booked online using the Eventbrite links www.eventbrite.co.uk – big Dig Workshop Portlaoise www.eventbrite.co.uk – Coin Striking Workshop Portlaoise
