Learn music - the world’s most popular language is the message from Portlaoise Comhaltas which is kickstarting a new season after its winter break.

The busy music group says they're offering the opportunity to everyone irrespective of financial means, to be part of a new season which gets underway with an open evening on Friday, September 13 at 7pm at St Francis School on the town's Borris Rd.

With Traditional Irish music and song enjoying a resurgence especially among young people, the Portlaoise branch explains further what it has to offer.

"Whatever the special occasion, wherever the place, a musical feature is always part of the event. People who learn to play music for their own enjoyment and relaxation are thankful for the gift that helps them through the ups and downs of life. Learning to play through the Comhaltas system is credited with developing memory, concentration and teamwork in group ensembles, celili bands etc - skills which enhance study and career prospects.

"The ethos of Comhaltas is community service, open to anyone interested in traditional Irish culture. The aim is to provide a professional service in the area of music, song and dance organised through a voluntary committee in response to local demand.

"Each year since 1951 the country celebrates Fleadh Ceoil na hÉireann as an international gathering, most recently at Wexford. Portlaoise is proud to have qualified to represent the Laois and Leinster on many occasions in various age groups since it was re-formed in 2009. Memorable Gig Rig performances at Drogheda, Mullingar and Wexford were a joy for the performers and audience alike. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

"Each year Comhaltas welcomes new members, some from 7 years old or thereabouts but it is never too late to join. Shared classes enable beginners to develop at minimal cost and an instrument bank allows them to experiment until they settle on their instrument of choice. An opportunity to perform on stage in concert with members of other branches broadens the social aspect of the experience as soon as they reach a suitable standard," says the branch.

Beginners are most welcome, also opportunities for competent musicians to join Ceili Bands and orchestral groups according to age/ability. For more details email: tolearnmiusic@gmail.com or text 0872345010.
