As part of the Laois Connects mental health promotion week, the GROW Mutual Support organisation will re-open their community group meeting on Wednesday, October 8 at 8pm at the Parish Centre Portlaoise.
GROW provides a confidential and supportive service to adults experiencing mental health difficulties in towns and communities across Ireland. The GROW organisation began in Australia as a mutual support/ self- help group for persons experiencing mental health difficulties in their lives. The organisation which was originally called Recovery has since this time spread to many other countries across the globe and today represents one of Ireland’s most successful community mental health support services. GROW is grant aided by each of the Health Service Executive regions and by the Department of Health and Children. There are currently over 140 groups operating in Ireland at the present time.
A GROW meeting is comprised of a group of adults over the ages of 18 who for a variety of reasons have been experiencing mental health difficulties in their lives. These difficulties can range from depression, anxiety, loneliness, bereavement and loss to name a few. The group meets on a weekly basis in a highly confidential setting whereby problems are discussed and challenges devised to help people to cope with the mental health difficulties they may be experiencing. The meetings are structured and follow a set pattern on a weekly basis.
GROW would also like to highlight that it has much to offer young people who may be experiencing mental health difficulties. Very often young people find it hard to talk about mental health problems and to seek the necessary support where and when they need it. Young people can also feel a sense of stigma attached to the difficulties they are experiencing. GROW can help break down these barriers by providing an understanding and confidential service to any young person who would like to attend a local GROW meeting.
Full information on all aspects of GROW’s services will be provided at the Parish Centre at 8pm, Thursday, October 8. GROW Midlands office can also be contacted at 0579351124.
