A garage in the Laois scarecrow village of Durrow has made a big investment in a greenfield site, bought from Laois County Council.

Oliver Stanley Motors Ltd, currently a Texaco filling station on the Cork Road, is buying a field zoned for development, on Swan Road behind the village's fire station, off the Abbeyleix road.

A site of 0.48 hectares is to be sold for €170,000 plus VAT, part of a larger 1.117 site that was on public sale by the local authority through an auctioneer.

The council states that the site was originally bought from Dr William Bannon in 1986. They note that a Material Contravention of the County Development Plan will be required for a portion of the land, as it is zoned Residential 2. The rest of it is zoned for Enterprise and Employment.

The remaining part of the field is Residential 2.

Councillors approved the sale at the April meeting of Laois County Council.
