A popular Laois bar and restaurant has made a shock announcement that it is closing down with immediate effect.
McEvoy's Bar and Restaurant in Abbeyleix announced their closure on social media on Sunday, May 21.
"McEvoy's Restaurant is now closed. Thank you to all our customers and staff for all your support. We have loved our time in Abbeyleix and it is with regret we must leave," the business announced.
Comments were turned off on the post but over 200 people registered their shock and sadness at the news.
The proprietor Sean McIlroy gave further detail in the business's phone message announcement.
"Unfortunately we are closed for the foreseeable future. We want to wish all our customers who have been here past and present all the best. Unfortunately we are closed. I hope someone else will get to take over McEvoy's Abbeyleix," he said.
The business lease was taken over by Mr McIlroy from the Stokes family of Castle Durrow almost four years ago in 2019.
The Abbeyleix Facebook page group gave their reaction.
"We are very sorry to learn of this news this morning".
