Portlaoise Institute has hailed what they describe as "an historic day" as they launch a new Hairdressing Apprenticeship.

"The first cohort of students on the Hairdressing Apprenticeship programme have embarked on their journey that will lead them to become fully qualified Hairdressers," the third level institute announced this week.

Ten aspiring hairdressers are the first to sign up to the new course and start their training this week.

They are Allie Brown, Rebecca Healy Creevy, Amy Hanlon, Chloe Bergin Keller, Emma Kelly, Grace Molyneaux, Roisin Cullen Nolan, Emma Murphy, Liana Savicka and Ria Singh.

The Hairdressing Apprenticeship at Portlaoise Institute offers a practical and hands-on route into a career in hairdressing, where students will have the unique opportunity to earn while they learn.

Apprentices will spend four days a week working with experienced employers, gaining practical experience in a real salon setting. This hands-on approach ensures that students develop the necessary skills and confidence to excel in the dynamic world of hairdressing.

Complementing their practical experience, the apprentices will dedicate one day a week to classroom-based learning at Portlaoise Institute.

Keith McClearn, Principal of Portlaoise Institute said they are thrilled to launch the apprenticeship.

“It provides a dynamic and comprehensive pathway for individuals passionate about pursuing a career in hairdressing. This program reflects our commitment to delivering top-tier education and preparing students for success in the ever-evolving
hairdressing industry,” he said.

Julia Mullally is Coordinator and lead teacher of the Hairdressing Apprenticeship.

“In the workplace, apprentices will be guided by approved mentors who bring a wealth of industry knowledge. This mentorship ensures a supportive and nurturing environment for skill development and personal growth. After three years of dedicated learning and practical experience, apprentices will graduate as fully qualified Hairdressers, holding a QQI Level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications,” the coordinator said.
