Retired members of An Post will protest outside Portlaoise's mail centre to campaign for their pension rights.

Post Office Pensioners United (POPU) have called for former An Post workers to gather and protest the cap on pension increases at 2%.

This cap was instated following the financial crash of 2008, and was planned to be removed by 2013.

The group have highlighted that though they are former civil servants, they do not qualify for the State pension scheme that other civil servants are entitled to.

"We are a volunteer led group of mainly retired and a growing number of current An Post employees, whose sole purpose is to have our Pension rights as enshrined in the 1983 P&T Act restored," POPU leader Paul Moreland argued.

"Tomorrow we move to Portlaoise Mails Centre for 5:15pm. All support welcome. Can you spare an hour to protect your future pension? Together we are stronger," they said.

"We welcome support from like minded groups and individuals."

In 2013, agreement was concluded between  An Post  and their Group of Unions, on a pension accord designed to address raised issues surrounding An Post's previous pension scheme.

"What has happened to the €400 million in PRSI savings that An Post accrued at pensioners’ expense?” Mr Moreland asked in an open letter in 2024.

“Retired An Post workers, who dedicated our careers to public service, should not be left on or below the poverty line.”
