A 116 bedroom Laois nursing home that was approved but never built, is planned to be replaced by a retirement village.
The nursing home was approved in Killenard back in 2017 by Laois County Council and then after it was appealed by a local couple, by An Bord Pleanála in 2018.
There had been multiple other local objectors at the time, while An Bord Pleanála's own inspector had advised a rejection.
The substantial development was to include the nursing home along with 40 assisted living units and 65 sheltered homes, a warden's gate lodge, medical consulting rooms, a dispensary, a gym and pool, a bistro/restaurant and a community meeting room all served by a bored well.
The applicant at the time was Mark Fox.
The new application was lodged on August 13, 2025, by applicant Karv Development Limited.
It asks permission to "make alterations to previously approved Planning ref. 17/147 (AMP-300178-17) for a retirement village on a site at Tierhogar, Killenard, Co.Laois".
"The application consists of replacement of 116 bed Nursing Care Centre, Community Meeting Room Building, removal of hardstanding and vehicular access to Village Square and associated works with Proposed 58 Nr. Assisted Living Units, New Landscaped Parkland and External Padel Tennis Court along with associated amendments to Car Parking, Drainage and Internal Road Layout and all associated Site Works."
