Morrissey's Pub in Abbeyleix is known locally and nationally.
A world famous pub in Laois that recently closed its doors unexpectedly for repairs, is getting a new general manager.
Morrissey's in Abbeyleix is a renowned stopover point for tourists.
The hospitality business saw a major step in its repair last weekend when the busy main street stopped for a crane to lift construction materials over the building.
Its long term manager John Nolan has also announced he is retiring, and who will fill his shoes.
John has been overwelmed by good wishes since his announcement over the weekend.
He has penned a lovely ode to the town and customers he has served since he began as a youth on a summer job.

"I’m absolutely blown away by all the good wishes and positive messages. You all know how much I love the place and the people of Abbeyleix.
"Little did I realise, when I started in Morrissey’s 32 years ago as a summer job, the experience and education I would receive from the staff and customers over the years — your parents and grandparents. I feel so grateful. I think I was lucky enough to catch the tail end of the golden age of pubs, in one of the best pubs in the world, surrounded by some of the greatest characters: Joe Mulhall, Benny O G, George Thompson, Dr Hanniffy, Tom Lenard, The Big Wheel, Mick O’Keefe, Oliver Tierney, Mick McGrath, Christy and Mary H, Mick Foley, The Professor Mick Nolan, Tom Casserly, Joe O’Brien, Liam and Margaret (Jampots forever), Sean Ruth, the whistling sweeper Gerry K, and Frank (The Bulger) with his mushroom mustard.
"There are so many more I could mention, but I’d be here all night! All the ones I’ve named have since passed on — may they rest in peace. There are still a few characters knocking around, but I won’t mention them in case I insult them!
"So this is John saying a very warm and heartfelt thank you to everyone I’ve laughed with, cried with, argued with, celebrated with, and solved the problems of the world with — often into the early hours over a pint or two — only to wake up and realise we’d forgotten what we decided, and had to do it all over again the next night!
From 1993 to 2025… and I’ve had more comebacks than Sinatra — and loved every single one of them. Who knows… when the project is finished, there might be one more! I’m looking forward to meeting you all on the other side of the counter. Thanks again, one and all," John Nolan said.
Announcing the big change, he had also confirmed who will take over.
"From day one, our goal was to bring this beautiful landmark building back to life — a place that holds such importance and pride for the town. Thanks to an amazing team, we’ve achieved something truly special. Your hard work, dedication, and passion have made this project what it is today.
"I’d also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our customers and the local businesses who have shown such fantastic support and encouragement along the way. Your belief in what we were creating has meant so much and helped establish a strong foundation for the future.
"A special mention must go to Orla and Mark for their outstanding support, leadership, and commitment throughout this journey — you’ve both been invaluable.
"My very best wishes go to Pauline, who will now take over as General Manager.
"A big thank you as well to Dan for his belief in the project and his investment in both the building and the people who make it what it is. His support has been at the heart of everything we’ve achieved.
"As the team moves forward, I’d like to remind everyone of the Morrissey's motto that will always define this place — good values, consistency, and the highest possible standard of customer service. "Be Just and Fear Not".
"These principles and values are what make this establishment truly special.
"Thank you all once again — to the team, the community, and everyone who has been part of this remarkable experience. It’s been a privilege to be involved, and I leave with immense pride and gratitude."
It is a busy time for the pub, owned by local man Dan Tynan, who is also seeking planning permission to add staff accommodation quarters in its rear buildings.
