After a number of years working in the family business it was inevitable that Portlaoise man Dean Ward would be struck by the entrepreneurial bug and decide to set up his own business.
“The decision to go out on my own was not an easy one,” explained Dean “I really enjoyed working in the family business but watching my father and uncle be their own boss and seeing the satisfaction they got from it gave me the courage to make the move.”
Dean’s Dad and uncle co-own M.S.M. Recycling in Birr, County Offaly and it was here that Dean learned everything he needed to know about life as a business owner.
“After working with my Dad and Uncle I was well aware of the hard work involved in running your own business. The hours are long and you do have to make sacrifices but it is also extremely rewarding especially when things go well. You can see the results of your hard work and that is very satisfying,” said Dean.
Born and reared in Portlaoise, Dean wanted to stay close to home and started looking for opportunities in the Laois area.
He always had an interest in cars and in early 2014 when the opportunity came along to buy into the Lock Doctor franchise he knew this was the ideal business for him.
“I liked the idea of running my own business but the franchise also gave me the opportunity to be part of something bigger, a growing nationwide brand. I knew this was a solid business that I could build up here in Laois.” Dean explained.
Also having a Degree in Automotive Management and Technology from DIT Bolton Street meant that Lock Doctor was the perfect fit for him.
Lock Doctor, a business created in Limerick in 2008 in the height of the recession, has grown into Ireland’s largest firm of locksmiths and has franchises around the country.
“We make keys for virtually every type of car which makes us unique” explained Dean, “and I get the opportunity to work with some interesting models of cars”.
But as Dean pointed out, Lock Doctor isn’t just about cars it is primarily a service business.
“I like to help people and providing the best customer service is what we’re all about. When a customer comes back to you or refers you on that’s when you know you’ve done a good job.
“I also enjoy being on the road and I like the fact I could be going anywhere after a phone call” said Dean.
“Every day is different and there’s always a new challenge. We even regularly rescue children who have been accidently locked in cars and homes which is a service we provide free of charge.”
Dean admits that running his own business doesn’t give him much free time for hobbies but two years’ in his hard work is paying off and the business is growing.
“I am definitely glad I made the move. It has been hard work and tough going at times but the business is doing well. I have been able to take on an employee and we have a second van on the road. I’m really just at the start of my venture and I see great opportunities to grow the business further. This is what keeps me going, I’m excited about what the future holds.”
