For years organic farmer Kevin Scully grew oats to feed his cattle, but one day when his youngest daughter Niamh asked him if they could make porridge with the oats, an idea was born for a new business - The Merry Mill.

Now Kevin, his wife Jenny and their 4 daughters grow oats which are harvested with their own combine harvester - ensuring that they are gluten free. They are then milled for porridge and ground for flour.

The RTE series Ear to the Ground went to the Scully farm in Vicarstown in Co. Laois during the summer to see Kevin harvest the year’s crop and even helped mill and pack some oats and flour.

The programme is due to air on Thursday, January 11 on RTE One at 8.30pm.

The Scully's are the only Irish family, growing, harvesting and milling Organic Gluten Free Oats on their home Farm.

Each member of the family has a role in the business. Kevin is the head miller/farmer, Jenny is in charge of administration, and their four daughters, Sadbh covers the marketing, Aoife covers the social media, Roisin covers labels and packaging and finally Niamh on exuberant idea generation.

Tune in and watch this organic Laois business bloom across your television screens in January!
