Phelan's Restaurant and Catering Service is one of the oldest and best known family businesses in Laois.
From its premises on Main Street Mountrath it has catered to generations of people, and is set to continue to do so well into the future.
Eddie Phelan started his business in a chip van in Mountrath in 1969.
In 1979 he opened the Restaurant and Takeaway, and the family is now into its third generation of running the business, with grandson Jack Cuddy (17) also working in the restaurant.
With Eddie in the business is his wife Maura, his daughters Edwina and Grainne, and son Gearoid who is the Head Chef.
Maura helps out with her homemade desserts and bread as well as the outdoor catering.
Last year was a busy one for the business which saw the Restaurant undergo a face lift last Autumn, with the introduction of a new state of the art kitchen and new interior decor.
“We reconfigured what we had," explains Edwina.
The changes reflect the Phelans desire to keep the business competitive and keep people in the town of Mountrath.
The 70-seat Restaurant now also has a wine and beer licence and a bar area.
There are a selection of wines and craft beers.
A big facet of the business is the outdoor catering which caters for special occasions such as christenings, Communions, Confirmations, Birthday Parties, Weddings and Funerals, in the home, marquees or pubs.
The food selection ranges from everything from soup and sandwiches to finger food to four course dinner.
Tables and chairs are also provided as part of the service.
One area that the Phelans hope to develop further is the whole area of healthier eating choices.
Most of their food is homemade, with a huge variety on the menu, ranging from pasta to burgers, homemade sandwiches steaks and mix-grills.
There are plenty of chicken and fish options as well as Starter choices.
The Breakfast menu also features great choice, while the Kids menu focuses on the healthier options with homemade chicken goujons and burgers included.
Everything is cooked to order, and the meat is sourced locally from butchers like Declan Fitzpatrick and Fran Feighery who is known for his award winning sausages.
Vegetables are sourced from Padraig Purcell in Abbeyleix, and chickens from Laois Poultry.
Phelan's has a local staff of 20.
The Phelans are keen to emphasise that they cater for the entire county as well as surrounding counties.
The Phelans also plan to expand their outdoor catering and hope to get an outdoor kitchen unit.
Phelan's are open seven days a week.
