There is no big employer in Laois and smaller companies have been hit badly by the recession according to figures on the county published by the Central Statistics Office.
Figures published in the last month show that there are no enterprises in Laois that employs more than 250 people. The Business Demography analysis of the county reveals that no such companies existed here between 2006 and 2012.
The analysis shows that most private enterprise is carried out by companies employing 10 people or less. There are just over 2,100 such firms registered in Laois. There are 45 companies that employ 20-49 people and just 13 firms employing between 50 and 249 people.
The number of bigger employers was halved during the recession.
Overall that number of companies in Laois reduced by 18% during the recession but these firms have been badly hit in other ways.
The number of people employed collapsed by some 4,000 while the number of people engaged in business through companies fell by nearly 4,600.
The figures are based on the address a company gives for tax purposes. No comprehensive source is available for business locations.
