Gardai seized a car while checking vehicles at a car meet in the Slieve Bloom Mountains just before Christmas.

Gardai from Mountrath, Abbeyleix and Portlaoise Roads Policing Unit conducted checks on vehicles found during the gathering at Glendine in the Slieve Blooms.

Gardai issued a number of points and fines, or fixed charge penalty notices, during the operation.

“Whilst out and about pro-actively patrolling their local area Mountrath Gardaí came across a large gathering of vehicles at Glendine, Slieve Bloom Mountains. With the assistance of the Portlaoise Roads Policing Unit and Members of Abbeyleix Garda Station every single vehicle was checked and the following offences were detected and a fixed charge penalty notice was issued for each offence,” Gardai stated on social media.

They discovered two vehicles with no tax, one without a valid NCT and eight vehicles with dangerously defective tyres.

The operation resulted in the allocation of a total of 15 penalty points issued and fines amounting to €820.

“One vehicle was also seized under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act,” Gardai added.

Gardai have attended at car meets in Glendine on previous occasions. Following complaints about antisocial behaviour in the area, former Garda Chief Superintendent John Scanlan warned those attending such car meets that Gardai would police such events in the Slieve Blooms Mountains and elsewhere in the county.
