Christmas is a time for gifts, but one little Portlaoise girl is thinking about others rather than herself this year.
Young Sophie Dowling a 4th class pupil at Portlaoise Educate Together NS, has written her letter to Santa Claus, with a special request.
Sophie has been touched by the plight of homeless people, and when her school held their second annual collection for Portlaoise Action To Homelessness (PATH) she included a Christmas card to PATH with a message for the people they help.
In the card she wrote the following to the homeless.
"Merry Christmas the homeless! And Santa will find you a home for Chrisamas. I now he will, just believe".
To PATH volunteers she wrote the following.
"Dear PATH for the homeless, I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. I asked Santa that could all the homeless have a home. Well I now Santa well give you and your family a home for Christmas. Happy Christmas from Sophie Dowling".
All the children at Portlaoise Educate Together NS were asked to donate one item from a list provided by PATH or bring in €1 by Friday December 15.
This year saw boxes and bags loaded with toiletries, underwear, socks, hats and food items and a total of €85 in cash was collected.
Siobhán Mannion is chairperson of the Parents Association at PETNS.
"I am delighted with the response of generosity from the children, parents and staff, especially at Christmas time," she said.
All items and money were delivered to PATH on Monday December 18, and will be distributed to the homeless over the Christmas period.
