UPDATE: Portlaoise Christmas Market hit by thieves to reopen with celebrity chef

A new Portlaoise Christmas market hit by thieves this week is not bowing down but reopening, with a big celebrity chef coming to support it.

Laois County Council and Laois Tastes food and drinks group had only launched their new Christmas market and funfair on December 13 when it was hit by a theft last Monday night, forcing a temporary closure.

There were concerns that the ten day market, held in the council's split level carpark, would have to be cancelled altogether.

However the council's Business Support Office has given a positive update this Wednesday, December 20.

“Due to a break-in on Monday night, we regrettably had to close the market on Tuesday, December 19th and Wednesday, December 20th.  The Market will re-open at 12 noon on Thursday 21st December and will continue on Friday 22nd and Saturday, December 23rd, 2023.

“There will be an exciting Cookery Demonstration by the renowned TV Chef and food writer, Edward Hayden, at 1pm.  We are thrilled to present a diverse schedule of events throughout this period.

“In addition to the scheduled activities, you can also look forward to musical entertainment and the funfair that will enhance your overall experience at the Market.

“The Business Support Unit sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure.  We are committed to providing you with a memorable and enjoyable festive atmosphere as we continue our holiday celebrations.

“Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Christmas Market on Thursday.”
