What does 2023 have in store for Ireland? Predictions in Old Moores Almanac

And what they got right in 2022

What does 2023 have in store for Ireland? Predictions in Old Moores Almanac

The Old Moore’s Almanac is the one with the green cover. It is the first and original, and Irish. Some editions over 200 years old still sit in the Long Room Library in Trinity, next to the Bibles!

Old Moore’s Almanac is 259 years old and has been a stocking-filler since its inception. It is most famous for its predictions of future events – both Irish and global. These predictions have been getting great domestic and international news coverage for their accuracy. For example, before it happened, Old Moore said that Kate Middleton already had a baby on board (before it was announced) and that her name would be Charlotte.

In previous years, Old Moore predicted that Kanye would have mental health problems, the Barrier Reef would be at risk of dying, and that drone pizza delivery would happen. He also predicted the rise of Bitcoin over 9 years ago. And of course, he predicted the pandemic, a year before it happened. Recently, in 2022, he predicted that there would be riots and an uprising in China. It just happened. He also predicted that Putin would have a health crisis and cause a scandal.

The magazine holds on to its position of having the highest circulation of any of the indigenous magazines in the country with sales hovering around 57,000 copies. It has enjoyed a revival in recent years due to its accurate predictions and its love of futurism.

As well as the world-famous predictions, the 2023 edition includes our usual ground-breaking features. One of our writers challenges the Big Bang Theory – is it time to stop believing in it?

So what are the best predictions Old Moore got right in 2022?

In Ireland, Old Moore predicted a scorcher summer in 2022, and temps hit the 30s in 2022… he also predicted a small tsunami, which there was in Cork after an earthquake, which he also predicted.

Further afield:

The prediction: Putin has a health crisis and a scandal. Terrorism returns to the European region, causing a shift in policy across Europe. Germany will be in the news all year, for something entirely strange. Shortages of items cause panic and hoarding.  A boat sinking will cause an international drama.

This paragraph has been one of the most amazing prediction sequences of the year. So let’s break it down.

Putin indeed seems to be ailing, with shaking and being unsteady as part of his symptoms. He also has had a cancer specialist shadowing him. Terrorism returns to the European Union – We can all agree that Ukraine has been at the sharp end of terrorism for months now. As for Germany being in the news, it seems as though they now face an energy and heating crisis thanks to Russia switching off the gas supply.  As for the prediction that there would be panic and hoarding after a shortage of items in the EU… this very thing has happened. A boat sinking causing an international drama? Well here it is.

One of the most famous predictions from 2022 must be that of “a second pandemic, unrelated to the first.” Unfortunately, Monkey Pox took hold this year, moving from Africa, right across the world.

Prediction: Rebel Wilson will have a baby. And that, she did.

Prediction: China will have an electronic Yuan up and running. Yep, it happened. Old Moore also said there would be a Britcoin. That’s on its way too, thanks to a crypto-friendly new UK prime minister.

Prediction: There will be new competitor to the big social media platforms, offering more freedom of speech.

Welcome, Twitter2.0.

Prediction:  Blind people will see again. That actually happened.

Prediction: Virtual sex will become astoundingly realistic with new equipment, making long distance relationships a thing. That actually happened. Yep, it happened. Check this out.

Prediction: Birth rates would fall. Yep, it happened.

Prediction: Trump will make noises about running again, but it will be conditional on a fair election system.

What happened: Trump announced he will be running again in 2024. And, he has also said that it must be a fair election. The voting scandal that plagued the last election looks like it will raise its controversial head again. This is via voting machines and censorship of media like Twitter.

Prediction: The economy in China is on the brink. Those Chinese citizens who have invested in property… will find themselves in dire financial straits.

What happened: The latest reports are that China is indeed in over its head. This article says that “China’s property slump and suffering economy is leading some to wonder if China could be on the brink of its own Lehman-style crisis.”

The prediction: A plane crash, then a second, close together.

What happened: In March, a Chinese Boeing jet crashed into mountains with 132 on board, with no survivors. The tragedy is still under investigation. After that, a Ukrainian cargo plane carrying weapons crashed in Greece.

Staying on the subject of planes, there was another prediction that there would be news about Malaysia’s missing flight MH370. In fact, new information came to light about where the plane could be resting in the sea. It was a big story, and the search is resuming again.

Old Moore also predicted a lot of volcano action this year.  Just last week, a volcano exploded in Iceland, spewing out its bright red innards.  In fact, 47 volcanoes around the world are currently busy spewing out lava.
