Festive round-up of Laois outdoor events this Christmas and New Year

Participants on the Clonaslee St Stephen's Day walk for Laois Hospice.

There is a whole menu of activities in Laois this Christmas to get you outdoors and work off the turkey and treats.

On Christmas morning, you can take part in one of two Goal Miles in Laois.

One is at the picturesque Oakvale Woods, Stradbally (near Windy Gap), Christmas Day, 10am-12pm. A second will be held from Portarlington GAA Grounds, Canal Road, Christmas Day, 11am-11:30am.

The GOAL Mile is running for 40 years, with participants running or walking a mile to raise funds for GOAL who do humanitarian work in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

On St Stephen's Day, you can choose from several events.

The St Stephen's Day Walk in Clonaslee in aid of Laois Hospice is a special event for hundreds of Laois families every Christmas.  This year they celebrate 30 years of walking, and as always there are two routes to choose from with lashings of hot tea, Christmas cake and other refreshments in the community hall. Sponsorship cards available from Sheila Bourke 087-633-9540. The walk can be done virtually at a location that suits you. Donation options are the Community Centre in Clonaslee on December 26 from 9 am or online www.justgiving.com/campaign/clonaslee-walk-2022

The very first Noel Ramsbottom 5k road race and family fun 5k will take place on St Stephen's Day morning.  Noel was a keen athlete and a proud Timahoe man and the organisers hope to make the race a big attraction in the years ahead in his honour.
Hosted by Tigh Mochua le chéile and Timahoe GAA club, registration is from 11am in Timahoe Hall with separate start times for both race and family fun run/walk. Tea and coffee in the Hall after the run. All funds raised go to the upkeep and maintenance of St Michaels Church in Timahoe.

In Ballyroan, you can watch vintage vehicles doing all the running at the Annual Christmas Convoy Road Run in honour of the late Tom Kinsella, all to raise funds for Laois Hospice home care. All vehicles are welcome, vintage and modern cars, tractors and trucks.  Registration at 11, start is at 12 noon, refreshments afterwards in Whelans Bar. No fee to take part, but donations accepted. Prize for best dressed vehicle and person on the day. Top prize in the draw is €1,000.

Also on St Stephen's Day is a Festive Family 5K, a fundraiser for both Ballinakill National School & Ballinakill GAA Club. There will be tea, refreshments and music throughout. Kids can also win a goodie bag for completing the 5K. It takes place from 12 noon to 2.30pm, starting from the Square.

On New Years Day, take part in a popular walk and tractor run in Ballacolla.
All walkers, vintage & modern tractors are invited to the village for the 2pm start of the annual Walk and Tractor run. Registration is at 1.30pm, and the route will traverse the now well trodden routes before returning to St. Patrick's Hall where refreshments and a raffle will be held. Proceeds from the day will go to support the local National School and The Hawthorn Community Centre.

The Annual John Dalton New Years Day walk in Timahoe, takes place at 1pm . All proceeds go towards the Irish Wheelchair Association. A great way to start off the new year. Contact David for sponsorship cards on 087 1305448, or just donate on the day, with refreshments afterwards in the hall.

Outdoor school fundraising activities continue into January.

The Ballyroan 10 Mile and 5k Fun Run takes place on January 22. Register now  with over €2000 in prizes in the AAI approved races. Chip timing. Guaranteed great atmosphere. Plenty of Refreshments post race. Register online: www.myrunresults.com

You can travel to Wexford for an icy cold dip in the sea in January, to support Timahoe National School in Laois.

The Timahoe NS Parents Association are taking the plunge this winter to raise funds towards building an outdoor classroom designed by the students and to subsidise swimming lessons for all students from 2nd to 6th class.

A group of brave (and mad) parents, family and friends of the school have volunteered to tackle the cold waters of Cahore Point, Co Wexford on Saturday 14th January. You can stay dry and warm but get the feelgood factor by sponsoring them, or be brave and jump in - no wetsuits allowed. See Timahoe NS Winter Swim on gofundme.com
