Laois Gardaí have made arrests and reunited a woman with her stolen car containing sentimental items including a quilt she was sewing for a family wedding.

The theft of the car and its contents was highlighted when the owner appeared on RTÉ’s Liveline.

“Recently Martina was talking to Joe Duffy on RTÉ Live Line about her car which had been stolen. The car was subsequently recovered in Laois along with the beautiful quilt she had made and "Susie" the sewing machine,” Laois Offaly Gardaí said.

Gardai said the car was stolen from Monasterevin in Kildare on Tuesday, March 7.

“After the incident was reported to Gardaí on Wednesday 8th March 2023, Gardaí in Monasterevin commenced an investigation where it was discovered the stolen vehicle left in the direction of Portlaoise/Portarlington,” said Gardaí. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Gardaí said following further enquires and assistance from Gardaí in Portarlington and Mountmellick, the stolen vehicle was recovered in Mountmellick, County Laois at 3pm on Wednesday, March 8.

A statement said a man in his late teens and a male juvenile were later arrested by Gardaí and taken to Portlaoise Garda Station where they were detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. One of the youths has since been charged to appear before Tullamore District Court this morning while the second has been released to be dealt with under the Youth Diversion Scheme.
