Pensioner damaged Garda’s radio in Laois

Four Brazilians, two living in Longford, appear in Portlaoise Court on firearms charges

A pensioner who damaged a garda radio in Laois was ‘extremely ashamed’ of his actions, a sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told.

James Donoghue, 70, of 14 Bruach Na hAbhann, Portlaoise was arrested for criminal damage and being drunk and abusive on Patrick Street in Mountmellick on January 21.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was among a group of males acting aggressively in Patrick Street at 12.10am.

He said the defendant was arrested for “shouting and roaring” and he caused €50 damage to a garda’s radio during the arrest. He said the man had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client was “extremely ashamed” of his actions on the night. He said the man was in his 70s and in receipt of a pension.

On the night in question, Mr Meagher said his client had been attending family function and a row had developed out on the street.

“He came out to try and broker the peace,” said Mr Meagher.

However, he explained the man ended up becoming involved. He said his client had brought €100 to court as a token of his sorrow, regret and shame at what had happened.

Judge  Andrew Cody said the man was a little bit old to be appearing in court as a novice.

He said he would strike out the charges if the man paid €250 to the Garda Benevolent Fund. He put the matter back to April 13 for proof of a donation and said if that is done the matter will be struck out.
