A man has appeared in court charged with assault at a football grounds in Portarlington last month.
David Macmahon, 45, of 25 Woodlands Park, Coill Dubh, Naas, Co Kildare is accused of Section 3 assault causing harm and engaging in threatening or abusive behaviour at Arlington FC, Lea Road, Portarlington on April 23, 2023.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the allegation was that the man had run onto the pitch and headbutted another man.
“Allegedly a mass brawl ensued,” said Sgt Kirby.
“A file has been sent to the DPP because the matter took place at a sporting event,” said Sgt Kirby. He said a large and complex investigation was ongoing.
“There may or may not be a racial element,” Sgt Kirby added.
Judge Andrew Cody described it as a “very serious matter” and asked Sgt Kirby how long the gardai needed. Sgt Kirby suggested a date in September or October.
Judge Cody adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on October 12 for DPP directions. He reserved the issue of jurisdiction in relation to the case.
