Kildare cocaine dealer jailed at Portlaoise court

Portlaoise District Court

A book of evidence was served on a man accused of driving at speed through a garda checkpoint.

Kevin Young, 26, with an address at 10 River Street, Clara, Offaly is accused of endangerment in relation to allegedly driving at high speed through a high visibility garda checkpoint at Habour Street, Mountmellick on November 20, 2021.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said there was just one count of endangerment in the book of evidence.

Solicitor Philip Meagher requested legal aid for two counsel.

“The charge carries a maximum sanction of seven years,” he explained.

He said the allegation was a serious matter and involved a member of An Garda Siochana.

Sgt JJ Kirby said the allegation does involve a member of gardai.

“It is a serious allegation,” he added.

Judge Andrew Cody agreed to assign legal aid for Mr Meagher and two counsel. He sent the case forward to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court beginning on June 13.
