Mother and child hidden in toilet during brawl in Portlaoise shop

A mother and child had to be ushered into a toilet to protect them during a brawl in an Eir shop in Portlaoise, a sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told.
Caleb Lifeta, 20, of 13 Coniberry Way, Portlaoise admitted a charge of violent disorder arising from the incident at the Eir shop in Lyster Square, Portlaoise on May 18, 2019.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the altercation took place when four or five males “set upon” a man in the shop at 3.15pm.
“A mother and young child were placed in a restroom to protect them,” Sgt Kirby said.
He said the accused was seen striking the man with his fist. He was arrested and made admissions, Sgt Kirby said.
Judge Andrew Cody said it appeared to him that the defendant sought to “minimise his involvement” in the matter.
Solicitor Michael Byrne said his client admitted his involvement and had entered an early plea. He said the man has no previous and was young at the time of the offence.
“He does take full responsibility,” said Mr Byrne, who told Judge Cody that the defendant was in employment.
Judge Cody applied a two year probation bond which requires the defendant to remain in employment, engage with the Athy Alternative Project and be of good behaviour.
