Fewer people were detected driving under the influence in Laois in the first three months of the year compared to the same period in 2022.
There were 25 incidents of Intoxicated driving in the first quarter of 2023, down on 31 during the same period last year, a recent meeting of Laois Joint Policing Committee was told.
Garda Superintendent Eamon Curley revealed the figures at the latest meeting of Laois Joint Policing Committee.
“Figures in that regard show approximately 50 percent of those intoxicated driving offences now are for drug driving, which I suppose is a change on previous statistics in that area,” said Supt Curley.
There were no fatal collisions recorded during the first quarter which is unchanged on the 2022 figures.
Traffic collisions involving damage but no serious injuries were at 195, down from 213 in 2022. Collisions with non serious injuries stood at 22, up from 16 during the same period in 2022.
There were seven collisions involving serious injuries in 2023, up on five during the same time last year.
Altogether in the first quarter of 2023, Gardai dealt with 250 traffic incidents, a reduction on the 265 encountered during the same period in 2022.
