Jail sentence for driving without insurance in Portlaoise

Woman with personality disorder would cost €48,000 per week to treat , Portlaoise court told

A jail sentence was given to a disqualified driver who was caught driving an untaxed car in Portlaoise.

David Cervenak, 27, with an address at 397 Market Mews, Maryborough Village, Portlaoise admitted having no insurance or licence on the Mountrath Road in Portlaoise on June 19 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that the accused had six previous convictions including two for driving without insurance.

Suzanne Dooner BL said her client had taken a chance because he needed to get medication for one of his children on the date in question. She said he is pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity.

“He was given chances before and drove almost immediately afterwards,” said Judge Andrew Cody.

He sentenced the man to three months in prison for driving without insurance and fixed recognisance in case of appeal. The defendant appealed the sentence shortly afterwards.
