Convicted of having €10 of cannabis in Portlaoise

 Donegal had 300 people looking for addiction treatment for cannabis in five years

A man was convicted for having €10 worth of cannabis at Portlaoise District Court. 

Liam Gavin, 29, of 42  Buttercup Avenue, Portlaoise admitted possessing the drugs at Borris  Road, Portlaoise  on August 29 last year. 

Garda Sergeant Michael Tarpey said the defendant was stopped while cycling on the Borris Road and found with the cannabis. He said the man has 22 previous convictions including three for drugs. 

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client hasn’t used cannabis for a number of months. She asked the judge to take the early plea into account. 

Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €100 and gave him three months to pay.
