Portlaoise 'theft spree' while Ploughing was on

Court - Young Portlaoise man drunkenly abused gardaí

A woman went on a “theft spree” in Portlaoise while the National Ploughing Championships was taking place.

Tracey Carthy, 34, of 27 Saint Rioch’s Street, Kilkenny admitted stealing from nine shops in Portlaoise on September 21, 2023.

“This was a theft spree, every shop in the town of Portlaoise on the same day, coincidentally a day when the Ploughing was on,” Judge Cody said.

The woman admitted stealing a vape pen from Dealz in Lyster Square, €266 of groceries from Supervalu on Lyster Square, €109 of toys from Tuthills Newsagents, a car battery, seat covers and hoover from Halfords. She also admitted taking anti flea spray and other items were €40 from Petmania, €48.95 of goods from Homestore and More, 23 packets of noodles, oven cleaner and other items valued at €45.15 from Homesavers and groceries valued at €76.50 from Lidl in Portlaoise.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant has 34 previous convictions. He said 17 were for theft.

“A bit like the last case. The penny hasn’t dropped,” Judge Cody said on hearing the number of previous convictions.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client would have struggled with mental health and alcohol issues.

“There is little to be offered by way of mitigation,” he admitted.

However, he said her guilty plea means gardai do not have to prepare a file on the case which would have been time  consuming.  He said she had written a letter for the court.

“She does strike me as a lady aware of her behaviour being unacceptable,” said Mr Fitzgerald.  He asked that the judge provide her with some hope.

“I would ask you for some light at the end of the tunnel. She is dealing with it honourably,” he said.

Judge Cody sentenced the woman to six months in prison. He also imposed a six month sentence which was suspended for two years. He granted legal aid in the case.
