Gardai set up dozens of checkpoints in Laois and arrested eight suspected drunk or drug drivers since the start of weekend.
The checkpoints are part of a major Christmas Road Safety campaign aimed at making the roads safer for all.
In total Gardai said 49 MIT(Mandatory Intoxicant Testing) checkpoints were set up around the county over the weekend. Drivers were tested for both drink and drugs at the checkpoints.
Gardai posted images of one vehicle which was stopped during the Christmas campaign.
“Laois Roads Policing Unit on patrol in Borris-in-Ossory last night stopped this vehicle. The driver was both drunk and disqualified. The vehicle was seized and the driver was arrested and charged to appear before Portlaoise District Court,” they said.
“The Christmas Road Safety campaign has commenced and as part of this Operation Surround was conducted in towns throughout the county over the weekend. 49 MIT checkpoints were performed with eight people arrested so far for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
“The message is simple. Never ever drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Gardai concluded.
