Three quarters of the drivers who were arrested for intoxication at a motorway checkpoint in Laois tested positive for drugs.

Gardai conducted 435 tests for drink or drugs at the multi-agency checkpoint on the Westbound lanes of the M7 at  Derryvorrigan in Borris-in-Ossory today.

The tests resulted in the arrest of four motorists for driving under the influence. Of these, Gardai said three were arrested on suspicion of drug driving while the fourth driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Gardai said a number of vehicles were seized during the operation which also resulted in the seizure of drugs.

They also said “a large number” of fines were issued for traffic offences.
