Man appeared at Portlaoise District Court

A man admitted driving incorrectly around a roundabout at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Babatunde Agboke (37) with an address at the Montague Hotel, Cappakeel, Emo admitted having no insurance on the N77 Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise on December 1, 2023.

Garda David Nolan said he observed the defendant in a 151D registered car “drive incorrectly around a roundabout” before “exiting incorrectly” from the roundabout. He stopped the accused who informed him that he was a learner permit holder. He said the man had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client was helping some friends move on the day and had borrowed a friend’s car. He said the car was insured for the driver but not the defendant.

“He works as a warehouse operative in Drogheda,” said Mr Fitzgerald.

“He seems to be doing well in this country. He is working and paying taxes,” he added.

Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €500 for not having insurance. He gave the defendant three months to pay.
