Gardaí will be checking your tyres at checkpoints during Tyre Safety Day.
Laois Gardaí have made a special appeal to drivers in the county to check their tyres to mark Tyre Safety Day on Thursday, May 16.
Sergeant Mick O'Connell, Laois Roads Policing Unit is reminding motorists that by law, it’s every driver’s responsibility to ensure that their vehicle’s tyres are safe and that all are a minimum 1.6mm in depth. READ MORE BELOW VIDEO
"The tyres are the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road and so your safety and the safety of others depends on their condition," said Gardaí.
"Thousands of these nifty tyre tread depth gauges have been issued to Gardaí this week, and they will be using them to check your tyres at a checkpoint during Tyre Safety Day. You can check their depth by running a €1 coin along the centre of the wheel. If the gold is not visible, you’re good to go! If you do decide to drive with damaged or worn tyres you risk prosecution and could be fined up to €5,000, receive a three-month prison sentence or both. You’ll also get five penalty points on conviction."
