Coote Street, Portlaoise
A truck driver crashed into a railway bridge causing traffic disruption and delays of an hour for trains in Portlaoise.
Gheorghe Croitor (55) of 11 Domonic Court, Cashel, Co Tipperary admitted crashing a HGV into the bridge at Coote Street, Portlaoise on May 1, 2024.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said there was “extensive damage caused to the trailer” of the Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) the defendant was driving.
He told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court that there were “delays up to an hour to all trains and traffic disruption” as a result of the incident.
He said Irish Rail engineers had to come out to inspect the bridge to make sure it was safe after the crash. The defendant had no previous convictions, he told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €500 for careless driving and gave him three months to pay the fine.
