Gardaí in Portlaoise are appealing for information following burglaries in Mountmellick and Stradbally.
A woman disturbed three burglars who were making their way up the stairs of a house at Cill Beg Manor, Stradbally at 4.50pm yesterday.
Gardaí said nothing was taken and the three males who had forced open a rear door, fled the house. They made their escape in a black VW Golf car.
Meanwhile, a house was burgled in Harbour Court, Mountmellick at around 4pm yesterday.
A back patio door was smashed and a green money box containing a sum of cash was stolen.
Gardaí are appealing for information in relation to the burglary. They said male in his 20s who was around 6ft tall and wearing dark clothing is believed to have been involved in the crime.
Gardaí say they have increased checkpoints around the county in order to deter criminals.
Anyone who has information or witnessed anything suspicious at either of the burglary locations in Stradbally or Mountmellick is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100.
