A court heard a man who took over €2,000 for work he didn’t do had a cocaine habit.

Patrick Kenneally (33) of 7 Leonards Court, Dunamaggin, Kilkenny admitted taking a €1,500 deposit and a €540 bank draft from two women at Castlefleming, Errill between November 8, 2021 and September 23, 2022.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the man took the money while working installing composite doors and windows. He said the man didn’t carry out the work or return the deposits.

“He stated that he had problems with cocaine,” said Sgt Kirby.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client had lost his job. He said the man suffered with mental  health difficulties and was engaging with his GP.

Judge Nicola Andrews said she wanted to see the money returned.

“I take a very dim view of this,” she told Mr Fitzgerald.

“He has got to start getting that money together,” she said.

She adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on January 27, 2025.
